What is the assessment of reading skills you might ask and why is it important? Let’s discuss it here –

Most children develop pre-reading skills at their own pace, based on their age. If any child struggles to improve their pre-reading and reading skills, it is imperative to get professional support to develop pre-reading skills for preschoolers. This will also help you to keep track of your child’s development.

When it comes to pre-reading skills, we need to assess 4 aspects of reading. It includes-

1. Verbal Language

Verbal language is the ability to understand and communicate clearly with others. By developing your child’s verbal language skills, you are increasing their vocabulary and speaking skills. This will help your child enjoy stories, and improve their comprehension & listening skills.

2. Letter knowledge

This includes naming and the recognition of letters. This can be hard for children to learn, but with time, they will learn to recognize letters and their sounds.

3. Phonological Awareness

This is a specialized listening skill that is necessary for children to learn how to read. This is essential for your child for their future use of phonetics

4. Beginning of writing

Writing includes fine motor skills as well as hand-eye coordination. Children need to learn how to control their writing tools. However, writing and reading are interrelated and take place in stages.

Why are Pre-Reading Skills Assessments important?

Pre-reading skills assessment for preschoolers is important because it helps parents and teacher to know the level of their students. Teachers can also monitor a child’s progress based on this assessment.
